Ms. Somers peacefully passed away at her residence in the early hours of October 15th, following a valiant and protracted battle against an aggressive form of breast cancer that endured for over 23 years.

During her final moments, Ms. Somers was surrounded by her devoted husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family. Initially, her family had intended to gather and commemorate her 77th birthday on October 16th, but they will now unite to pay tribute to her extraordinary life instead.

The family expresses their profound gratitude towards the millions of fans and followers of Ms. Somers, who held a special place in her heart. She will be remembered for her exceptional talent, grace, and unwavering determination.

In a separate statement, Hay conveyed to PEOPLE that the dwelling where Somers spent her final moments was a tangible realization of one of her cherished ambitions.

Furthermore, Hay expounded on Somers’ unwavering commitment to her professional endeavors and aspirations, which entailed integrating her family, including grandchildren and step-children, into her business ventures. Her publicist underscored that she remained actively engaged in her pursuits until the very end.

Prior to her birthday, Somers expressed to PEOPLE her eager anticipation of celebrating the special day in the company of her beloved family members. The esteemed actress and successful entrepreneur openly revealed her plans to be surrounded by her closest loved ones on this momentous occasion, including her cherished spouse Alan Hamel, their three offspring Leslie, Stephen, and Bruce, as well as Bruce’s wife Caroline, and their six delightful grandchildren.

During the same interview, Hamel, who entered into the sacred bond of matrimony with Somers in the year 1977, wholeheartedly praised his wife’s unwavering strength and resilience. He graciously shared with PEOPLE, “Suzanne and I have recently returned home from our time spent in the Midwest, where Suzanne underwent an intensive six-week physical therapy program. Even after our five decades together, I am continually astounded by Suzanne’s extraordinary determination and steadfast commitment.”

Somers announced on Instagram in July that she had a recurrence of breast cancer, which was the first time since her initial diagnosis in 2000. She shared a photo of herself and her 87-year-old partner, Hamel, and stated that she has been fighting off the disease with the most effective alternative and conventional therapies. Somers added that she is familiar with how to prepare for battle and is a determined fighter.

Furthermore, Somers gained recognition for her notable portrayals of Chrissy Snow in Three’s Company (1977-1981) and Carol Foster Lambert in Step by Step (1991-1998). Additionally, she played the role of Sheriff Hildy Granger in She’s the Sheriff (1987-1989).

The actress was also renowned for her literary works, having authored more than 25 books, some of which became New York Times bestsellers. Moreover, she ventured into the health and beauty industry, particularly with the ThighMaster exercise equipment.

Somers is survived by her “blended family,” which includes her son Bruce, 57, her stepchildren Stephen and Leslie, and her six grandchildren.
