According to a recent report, the iPad Air is set to receive single-stack OLED screens, along with an 8.7-inch iPad mini in 2026 and a new 12.9-inch iPad Air in 2027.
Apple has allegedly been engaged in efforts to transition to an OLED screen for the iPad Pro over a considerable period. The most recent speculation suggests that this display technology will be incorporated into the 2024 iPad Pro and 2026 MacBook Pro models.
There have been previous claims suggesting that Apple will introduce OLED technology to the iPad Air and iPad mini in the future.
ETNews, a Korean publication, has recently corroborated these assertions and provided additional information. According to their report, after the release of the iPad Pro in 2024, both the iPad Air and iPad mini are expected to feature single-stack OLED screens by 2026.
According to the report, Apple is planning to incorporate OLED technology in both a redesigned iPad Pro and a brand-new 12.9-inch iPad Air by 2027.
It has been widely anticipated that the iPad Pro will incorporate a dual-stack OLED display, which is a significant development. Although OLED technology enhances contrast and brightness, it is known to have a relatively shorter lifespan. However, by utilizing a double-stack configuration, the effective lifespan of the display is significantly extended.
Apple deemed this improvement significant enough to warrant a change in suppliers from single-stack OLED screens. Samsung, initially unwilling to develop a double-stack system exclusively for Apple, consequently lost its place in the company’s future endeavors.
Samsung reportedly shifted its focus to double stack development within a short span of time, with the aim of regaining orders from Apple.
According to ETNews, there is no information available on the use of double stack displays in any models. However, they have translated that the upcoming 2027 version of iPad Pro will have a next-generation panel that will enhance the light efficiency of the panel through Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE), which is expected to reduce power consumption by 20%. Additionally, it is speculated that this panel may support an under-screen camera for Face ID. Interestingly, the report also mentions that the 2026 iPad mini may have an 8.7-inch screen, which is larger than the current model’s 8.3-inch screen.
